I write flash fiction of one thousand words or less. I post the stories on the Blog page. When possible, these pieces will flesh out different parts of The Tenderfoot Series backstory.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, a mythical figure of Scandinavian folklore was born. The Fossegrim spent decades playing his fiddle in a waterfall, rewarding those who brought gifts with musical abilities. But times change. Today he will cross an ocean to follow Julianna to college. As a freshman in Chapel Hill, she has no idea what she’s in for. And that’s just campus life. A world traveler, Jules is street-smart but the wounds from her mother’s unexpected death fester.
And then it begins. When her powers manifest after her 18th birthday, Nicholas makes contact. He bides his time as desperation brings her closer, slowly revealing her family’s secret piece by piece. To Nick’s dismay, Jules falls in love with ambitious Andrew, a collegiate fencer who is always in the right place at the right time. The distraction interferes with her training as time grows short. On Halloween, Nick pushes Andrew too far and Jules runs from them both. On her own again, has Jules learned enough? For Nick isn’t the only creature who crossed the ocean to follow her…
Tenderfoot chronicles one daughter’s coming of age story as she deals with the revelation of her family’s paranormal secret. It is the first of two paranormal fantasy novels in The Tenderfoot Series with a length of 97,000 words/ 265 pages available as an ebook at multiple online book sellers for $2.99, and in trade paperback for $12.99 from Amazon.com.
Heart, hand, and sword – that’s what I promised Jules. I was nineteen years old. What did I know?
Sure, I’d noticed Jules was slightly unusual. Like she always knew where I was and how I felt. Yeah, it was odd, but it was also kind of romantic. One day, I’d even caught her fighting telepathically with Nick, her trainer. Not that I was surprised, because she was different from other girls – and who wouldn’t find something to fight about with that guy? Frankly, the only one who needed training was him, starting with manners and ending with butting out. But Jules made it clear they were a package deal and that was that.
Then a creature from Nick’s past attacks Jules. She won’t rouse from sleep, her coma a reaction to a magic spell. It gets worse. She pulls me into her dreams – old memories that reveal her secrets. I fear Jules might be alone in them forever unless we find a way to remove the magic dagger wrapped around her wrist.
There’s only one thing I can do.
Get in the car with Nick and pray we get help in time…
Told from Andrew’s point of view, this New Adult Urban Fantasy story explores the depths of love, anger, and college-age friendship.
